What Are the Most Popular Types of Siding For Homes and Why…

House siding is great way to dress your home up with texture and color. Before you make your siding choice, you will want to take into consideration each type of siding and how it measures up for durability, water resistance, and ease of installation. The following are 6 of the most popular types of siding to choose from…

Vinyl siding

Vinyl siding is low cost, versatile, and easy to maintain. These characteristics make it them popular type of siding but some homeowners and designers don’t like the look of it. What you can’t deny is that vinyl siding is the least expensive and easiest way to side a home that requires the least maintenance of any other type of siding.

Wood Siding

Wood siding is beautiful when it is maintained properly. It’s mostly seen on bungalows, cape cod, and cottage style houses. The downside is the maintenance required to keep it looking great and it does look great when it’s maintained. Wood siding will require chalking and painting or staining to prevent water damage and insects and rodents can cause problems. If properly maintained, your wood siding could last 50-75+ years! There is clapboard wood siding and shakes and shingles. Shingles will give you a more smooth and orderly look. You can also choose western red cedar or redwood for a more rustic look.

Brick Siding

Brick siding is made from fired clay and has many different sizes and textures. Most times you see brick siding on Colonial, Tudor, and English cottages. Modern brick siding is a veneer over a wood frame house. A membrane is usually added between the brick and the wood frame to prevent water from getting to the wood. Brick siding can last as long as your house but installing it is labor intensive and costly.

Fiber-cement Siding

This product allows you to have the look of masonry, stucco or wood but at a much lower cost with very little maintenance required. It is non-flammable and termite-resistant and there are a ton of styles, textures, and finishes to choose from. However, it can be susceptible to moisture-related problems if not maintained properly.

Stucco Siding

Stucco is a mixture of building sand, Portland cement, lime, and water. Wood walls with a waterproof barrier paper and galvanized-metal screening are put the house frame and then the stucco is added. You can see stucco on many Mediterranean, ranch, and Spanish-mission type homes. The installation is very important so that it doesn’t crack later on but a good installation can last as long as your house does.

Stone (left) and Stone-veneer (right) Siding

Granite and limestone are loved by most homeowners because they add curb appeal and texture to a home. It can be an expensive option and sometime homeowners use it only in sections of the home. The less expensive and more lightweight open to stone is stone veneers made from real and synthetic materials. An annual cleaning will be enough to maintain the stone veneer siding.
