Tips For Choosing The Right Shingle Color For Your New Roof…

Your roof is one of the most important parts of the exterior of your home, and choosing the best color for your shingles will ensure that your home looks beautiful. In general, roofs last about 20 years, so you might be stuck with the shingle color for quite a while. To make an informed decision, you should consider your home style, the look that you want to achieve, and the climate where you live. Here are a few tips of ways to help find the right color for your shingles.

Do You Need To Contact Your Home Owners Association (HOA)?

If you live in a community where you have a Home Owners Association the color you like may be restricted. Make sure to check first. Our suggestion is ask your HOA manager before shopping for shingles.

Shop Your Neighborhood

Drive around several neighborhoods to get an idea of what color of roofing would look best on your home. Look for houses with a similar shape, exterior, and color as yours. Note which roofing and siding pairings seem to look the most appealing to you, and search online for houses that are architecturally similar to yours. For example, a ranch house might look good with a combination of colors while a traditional colonial would benefit from shingles with one solid color. A Spanish style home might look good with reddish clay-colored roof shingles which would mimic traditional clay roofing tiles, for example.

What is Your Local Climate?

The color of your shingles can affect the temperature of your attic by 20 to 40 degrees! This can make a big difference in the heating or cooling cost of your home. Light shingles deflect sunlight and help keep temperatures down in hotter climates, while dark shingles absorb heat and help homes stay warm in colder climates. Dark shingles also help snow and ice on your roof melt faster.

Shingle Color Coordination

Match with colors found elsewhere in the bricks, wooden siding, stone, stucco or trim on your home. For example, a dark gray or black roof will look good with a gray or blue house, while a brown, cream or tan colored house will match better with brown shingles or a mix of cream and brown.

Ask a Professional Roofer

Before you choose a roof color, however, contact a qualified roofing professional. They have seen roofs all across your area and are knowledgeable about current trends in shingle colors. After you have done all you research about color, discuss your decisions with your professional, they can help with the final decision.
